At 2402 (Burghfield) Squadron, we are fortunate enough to have our own 15M long tube range under the Cadet Hut. On this range, qualified cadets can shoot using the No 8 rifle. Shooting usually takes place a few times a month, but always takes place on Mondays.
To start shooting, cadets must pass a WHT (Weapons Handling Test), after sufficient training. A qualified RCO (Range Conducting Officers)will give the cadets training for around two or three nights, covering all aspects, from safety and rules to parts of the rifle. When the cadets have completed their training, they must pass their WHT. A WHT is made up of a series of questions and a practical part. Once a cadet has proven his or her competence with a weapon, they may then move on to shoot on the range.
This is not the only opportunity to shoot within the ATC. You may also participate in Wing or even Regional shooting competitions, and even get to practise on RAF base ranges, using a variety of other weapons. There are four different marksmanship badges to attain within the Air Training Corps; Squadron Marksman, Wing Marksman, Regional Marksman and Corps Marksman.
