Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the ATC part of the Royal Air
Force?
A: Only the Commissioned Officers (staff) are part of the RAF
Volunteer Reserve (Training Branch), everyone else are volunteers or
civilians with no call-up eligibility. Nationally, the organisation
is administered by a small team of serving and retired RAF
personnel.
Q: If I joined would I have to join the
RAF or Forces?
A: NO, there is requirement, expectation, or pressure to join. Some
Cadets do join as they found their ATC experience interested them in
serving as Adult uniformed service.
Q: Do I need to buy lots of expensive
kit?
A: NO, all uniform is provided free of charge. The only exception is
foot ware, we expect cadets to eventually purchase their own RAF
service parade shoes and boots for outdoor activities. Optional
items of dress can be privately purchased but are not essential to
taking part in cadet activities.
Q: I have medical
conditions/disabilities, can I join?
A: Yes, there are no medical requirements, though we are an 'active'
youth organisation, and some events may be physically demanding. WE
aim to allow everyone to take part, but it's really up to you and
your judgement of how capable you think you are to take part in
certain things. n.b. flying training does require a formal medical.
