2402 (Burghfield) Squadron is part of Thames Valley Wing, in the South-West Region of the ATC. We meet on a Monday and Wednesday night for two hours in two different locations in Burghfield Common, the Scout Hut on Hollybush Lane on Wednesdays, and the Cadet Hut, Willink School, School Lane on Mondays. We currently have a squadron of between 30 and 40 cadets, both girls and boys, aged between 13 and 18.
Some of our core activities include shooting, flying, gliding and First Aid. Shooting is done in our 15M long tube range, underneath the Cadet Hut, but you will be expected to pass your WHT (Weapons Handling Test) before you can shoot. First Aid is required for your First Class training, namely the HeartStart course. Flying and gliding are excellent opportunities, a real experience, and are always worth putting your name down for.
As a Cadet, you will also be expected to put your name down for services, such as working at the May Fayre, or participate in Wing or Regional activities, such as Shooting Competitions, athletics and other sporting events including football and swimming.
Many of the exercises we do on Squadron don't take place in the Cadet/Scout hut, but in the wooded area behind the Scout Hut. Many activities, like orienteering or fieldcraft are done in this area.
During your First Class training, you will learn Aircraft Operations and Airmanship which include learning the layout of an airfield, and certain aircraft instruments and controls. You will also learn about the history of flight, and the history of the ATC.
As you can see there are plenty of opportunities and activities to suit everyone.
